I
could write about
The club was formed in 1893 in
a pub in New Brompton, a district of Gillingham but in 1913 they changed their name to that of the town
itself. The club operated in the Southern League and that was incorporated into
the Football League itself in 1920. The Gills played in the old Division Three
South but were voted out of the League in 1938, being replaced by Ipswich, but
regained their league place in 1950 when the league was expanded. Sadly for me,
the team never rose to great heights until the year 2000 when we won the
Wembley Division Two play-off beating Wigan 3-2 and thus rising to the second
tier of the League, Division One, for the first time in our long history. We
stayed in that tier, re-named The Championship, for 5 seasons, reaching our
best-ever finishing position of eleventh, under the legendary Andy Hessenthaler.
Since then, two relegations
and we’re back in the lowest tier of the League, but a bright start to this
season has us dreaming of going back to lofty heights soon.
